This train is bound for glory

Or, at least, it’s headed for an ice cream shop!

On Friday, my culture & civilization class took a field trip to the National Museum, and then took the train to the next city over (about 20 kilometers, or 15ish miles, away) just to experience public transportation via train in Costa Rica.

See, we’ve had plenty of bus rides on the local public bus routes. They are bumpy, crowded, usually a bit uncomfortable (especially if you’re tall or don’t like the heat), but cheap. So, I was glad to see what a train ride was like; I’d never ridden a train before, not even in the States. Compared to the Costa Rican bus rides, the train was much smoother, just as cheap, and air-conditioned–but still crowded. As in, the ones who sat down were lucky. Fortunately 25 minutes in a fairly smooth train ride isn’t that bad.

So when we got to Heredia, all we did was walk a few blocks to the ice cream shop, get milkshakes or sundaes or what-have-you, enjoyed the frozen bliss, and walked back to the train station for our return journey.

P.S. More pictures from the field trip here!
